Mount Muhabura, one of the three awe-inspiring volcanic mountains in the Virunga Massif, stands proudly at 4,127 meters above sea level, forming a natural border between Uganda and Rwanda. Known for its iconic cone shape and breathtaking summit views, Muhabura has long attracted adventurers seeking a demanding but deeply rewarding hiking experience. This year, members of the Uganda Hiking Club embarked on an unforgettable three-day expedition to conquer this majestic peak—and the trip proved to be a perfect blend of adventure, teamwork, challenges, and unforgettable memories.
Our journey to Muhabura was more than just a hike; it was a chance for members to reconnect with nature, test their limits, and foster new friendships. With a vibrant mix of local and international participants, including last-minute sign-ups eager to be part of the action, the three-day tour became a remarkable testament to unity and shared passion for the outdoors.
Understanding Mount Muhabura: The Mountain of the Guide
The name “Muhabura” translates to “The Guide” in the local language, a name inspired by its dramatic shape that towers high and can be seen from several kilometers away. Hiking Mount Muhabura is known for being relatively steep, with a rapid elevation gain compared to many other East African mountains. The trail is lined with volcanic rocks, rugged terrain, and refreshing alpine vegetation.
Although the hike is challenging, it is incredibly scenic, with views overlooking the Virunga Volcano chain, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Lake Bunyonyi, Rwanda’s Twin Lakes, and on a clear day, even the distant peaks of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
For our Uganda Hiking Club team, reaching the top meant embracing the steepness, pushing through altitude, and enjoying every moment that nature presented.

The Three-Day Uganda Hiking Club Adventure
Day One: Arrival, Briefings, and Team Bonding
The trip kicked off with the group members gatherig from Kampala, we meet others in Mbarara, and others in Kisoro, and then we went to the hike as one group. Members arrived from various parts of the country, along with several international hikers who had recently joined the club. The excitement was high, especially for first-time hikers who had heard stories about Muhabura’s legendary slopes.
Upon arrival, we checked into our lodges and gathered for an evening briefing led by our experienced hiking guides. This session covered:
- The history and geography of Mount Muhabura
- Safety guidelines and expected weather conditions
- The approximate duration of the hike
- Essential items needed for the next morning
Our guides emphasized hydration, pace control, teamwork, and mental preparation. After the briefing, members shared stories of past hikes—Rwenzori, Elgon, Sabinyo, and Gahinga—creating a warm, inspiring atmosphere. The evening ended with dinner and early rest, as we needed to be up before dawn.
Day Two: The Big Hike – Conquering the 4,127m Giant
The second day was the heart of our expedition—the actual hike to Mount Muhabura. By 6:00 AM, the team was gathered at the starting point inside Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, ready with backpacks, trekking poles, snacks, and a determined spirit.
After registration and a short warm-up, we set off into the mountain’s lush foothills. The hike consists of three major stages, each offering a unique experience:
Stage One: The Warm-Up
This first section took us through gentle vegetation, foggy forest layers, and open meadows. Members enjoyed easy conversations, taking photos, and admiring the surrounding views of Mount Gahinga. The cool morning breeze made the warm-up stretch comfortable and enjoyable.
Stage Two: Steeper Grounds and Rocky Sections
The second section presented more serious climbing. The trail became steeper, and volcanic rocks became a more dominant feature. Here, hikers started to feel the real elevation gain. Some slowed down due to altitude, while others powered through with encouragement from fellow members.
The Uganda Hiking Club spirit truly shone during this stage—hikers shared water, offered a hand on steeper areas, and kept the group’s morale high with laughter and songs.

Stage Three: The Final Push to the Summit
The final stretch was the most demanding yet the most rewarding. Vegetation became thinner, temperatures dropped, and the air felt lighter. Each step was a reminder of our goal ahead. But nothing compared to the feeling of finally stepping onto the summit of Mount Muhabura.
At 4,127 meters, we were treated to an incredible panorama: the rugged Virunga ranges, sparkling crater lake at the top, sprawling farmlands of Kisoro, and the dramatic landscapes stretching into Rwanda.
Some members shed tears of joy, others screamed with excitement, and many embraced one another—overwhelmed by the sense of achievement. Group photos were taken, flags were raised, and personal reflections were shared. The summit experience was unforgettable and easily the highlight of the entire trip.
After enjoying our time at the top, we began a descent that required careful footing but allowed more time to take in the scenery. By late afternoon, we returned to the base, exhausted but full of accomplishment.

Day Three: Relaxation, Reflections, and Departure
The final day of the tour was set aside for rest and relaxation. After breakfast, members reflected on the adventure and shared their favorite moments. Some were proud of overcoming altitude challenges, others celebrated new friendships, and many expressed gratitude for being part of a community that encourages growth and adventure.
Later, we visited Kisoro town for quick sightseeing and souvenir shopping. Members purchased crafts, local coffee, hiking souvenirs, and art pieces as reminders of their Muhabura experience. By midday, we began our journey back to Kampala and other destinations, carrying home stories that would last a lifetime.
