About Mount Muhabura

Mount Muhabura is located in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, in southwestern Uganda, near Kisoro town. The mountain is shared by both Uganda and Rwanda, and its conical shape makes it one of the most beautiful volcanic mountains in East Africa. On a clear day, hikers are treated to panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, the Rwandan hills, and even parts of Lake Bunyonyi.

The trail to the summit offers an exciting challenge. It is steep but manageable, taking you through varying vegetation zones—from lush montane forests at the base to alpine moorlands near the summit. At the very top, hikers are rewarded with a spectacular sight—a small crater lake that reflects the sky like a mirror.

This blend of natural beauty, adventure, and tranquility makes Mount Muhabura one of Uganda’s most sought-after hiking destinations.

The Hiking Experience: What to Expect

Day 1: Arrival and Preparation

The adventure begins in Kisoro, where hikers gather for a briefing session. You’ll meet fellow adventurers, register, and check your gear. Uganda Hiking Club ensures everyone is well-prepared, offering advice on what to carry—sturdy hiking boots, warm clothing, a rain jacket, snacks, and plenty of water. In the evening, enjoy a campfire and get ready for the next day’s challenge.

Day 2: The Ascent to the Summit

Hiking Mount Muhabura usually starts early in the morning. The trailhead begins at about 2,500 meters above sea level, and the climb can take 6 to 8 hours depending on your fitness level. Along the way, you’ll pass through bamboo forests filled with birdlife and occasionally spot golden monkeys or antelopes grazing quietly.

As you ascend, the terrain becomes steeper and the vegetation shorter, offering open views of the surrounding volcanoes. The final stretch is challenging but incredibly rewarding. Upon reaching the summit, you’ll be greeted by the tranquil crater lake and breathtaking 360° views across Uganda and Rwanda. This is the perfect spot to take memorable photos and reflect on your achievement.

Day 3: Descent and Relaxation

The descent is easier and takes about 3–4 hours. Once back at the base, hikers often celebrate with a community lunch or a short cultural visit to the nearby Batwa community, where you can learn about their forest traditions and way of life.

Tips for a Successful Muhabura Hike
